Marine Staff Sgt. Leon H. Lucas Jr., 32, of Wilson, N.C.

SSgt Lucas was assigned to 3rd Battalion, 4th Marine Regiment, 1st Marine Division, I Marine Expeditionary Force, Twentynine Palms, Calif.; died Aug. 1 in Helmand province, Afghanistan, while conducting combat operations.


SSgt Lucas enlisted in the Marine Corps on March 20, 2002 and served two tours in Iraq before deploying to Afghanistan.

JACKSONVILLE, N.C. - The family of a North Carolina Marine killed in Afghanistan is saying goodbye.

A funeral service and burial is being held Monday for 32-year-old Staff Sgt. Leon Lucas Jr., who died earlier this month after being wounded during combat in Afghanistan.

The Wilson man's funeral is at a Baptist church in Jacksonville followed by burial in a nearby state veterans cemetery.

Lucas leaves behind a wife, a 4-year-old son and a 2-year-old son. His family says he and his wife were expecting a third child in December.

Lucas' personal service awards include the Purple Heart, Combat Action Ribbon with Gold Star, Iraq Campaign Medal, Afghanistan Campaign Medal, Global War on Terrorism Expeditionary Medal, Sea Service Deployment with Triple Bronze Star, Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal with Gold Star, Navy and Marine Corp Commendation Medal, Marine Corps Good Conduct Medal with Bronze Star, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, National Defense Service Medal and NATO Medal ISAF-Afghanistan.

SSgt Lucas is survived by his parents, Teresa and Leon Sr.; wife, Mary and their children Tyson, 4, Zachary, 2, and one on the way, due in December; sisters, Ericka, Deborah and Tabitha.

Marine Staff Sgt. Leon H. Lucas Jr. was killed in action on 8/1/11.
