Remember Our Heroes
Army Capt. Wesley J. Hinkley, 36, of Carlisle, Pa.
Capt. Hinkley was assigned to 3rd Special Troops Battalion, 3rd Sustainment Brigade, Fort Stewart, Ga.; died April 4, 2011 in Baghdad as a result of a non-combat incident.
Hinkley served as a finance officer, Fort Stewart spokesman Kevin Larson said.
Hinkley joined the Army in 1998 and was assigned to Fort Stewart in 2009, Larson said. He had one deployment. Hinkley was supporting Operation New Dawn, the Department of Defense said.
Hinkley graduated Boiling Springs High School in 1993 and a member of the Shippensburg University Class of 2001.
During his high school years, Hinkley was a member of the chess club.
He served in the Army, returned to Shippensburg University, where he was a history major and a member of the university's Army ROTC program. Receiving his commission as a 2nd lieutenant, Hinkley returned to the Army as an officer.
Lt. Col. Gene Myzdail, the recruiting operations officer with the ROTC at Shippensburg, said Hinkley was an exemplary cadet. “He was a good soldier,” he said. “He did his duty and showed up on time.”
Myzdail said Hinkley was active in the ROTC program. “He had prior service, so he would bring that experience to other cadets,” he said.
Capt. Hinkley's death is under investigation.
He is survived by his mother, wife and a son.
Army Capt. Wesley J. Hinkley died in a non-combat related incident on 4/4/11.
