Army Spc. Nicholas W. Newby, 20, of Coeur d’Alene, Idaho
Spc Newby was assigned to 145th Brigade Support Battalion, 116th Cavalry Heavy Brigade Combat Team, Idaho National Guard, Post Falls, Idaho; died July 7, 2011 in Baghdad of injuries suffered when insurgents attacked his convoy using an improvised explosive device. Also killed was Army Spc. Nathan R. Beyers.
Spc Newby born in Anchorage, Alaska, moved to Coeur d'Alene with his family when he was 5 years old. He graduated from The Bridge Academy Alternative High School in 2008, but had also attended Lake City High School. He enlisted in the Army National Guard shortly before graduation and served as a machine gunner.
While in Iraq, Spc Newby was completing college courses via the internet. He had plans to complete his Associates Degree at North Idaho College before attending Boise State University
Spc Newby’s parents said their son could play a variety of musical instruments, including guitar, bass guitar, saxophone and drums. They described their son as intellectually curious and an avid reader.
“Nick would do anything for anybody who needed his help,” they said. “He’d stick by his friends and never gave up on anybody. He had a great sense of humor.
“He loved thrashing his truck and then fixing it; we recall digging him out of the snow and we all smiled through it. Nick loved his family, and everybody loved him.”

Spc. Newby is survived by his mother and stepfather, Theresa and James; father and stepmother, Wayne and Brigette; brothers Nathan and Ryder and his doggie, Jax.
Army Spc. Nicholas W. Newby was killed in action on 7/7/11.
