Army Sgt. 1st Class David R. Hurst, 31, of Fort Sill, Okla.

SFC Hurst was assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 30th Infantry Regiment, 4th Brigade Combat Team, 10th Mountain Division (Light Infantry), located at Fort Polk, La.; died June 7, 2008 in Baghdad of wounds sustained when his vehicle encountered an improvised explosive device.

Tulsa World -- FORT SILL — A Fort Sill soldier was killed in Iraq on Saturday, military officials said Monday evening.

Army Sgt. 1st Class David Raymond Hurst, 31, died after a roadside bomb tore through his vehicle in Baghdad, according to the U.S. Department of Defense.

Hurst was an infantryman assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 30th Infantry Regiment, 4th Brigade Combat Team, 10th Mountain Division, operating from Fort Polk, La.

He was on his second stint in the Army and was assigned to Fort Polk in January 2007

After first enlisting in March 1995, Hurst was honorably discharged in June 1998. He returned to active duty in August 1999.

It was unclear Monday night how long he had been in Iraq.

Hurst received more than a dozen awards during his service, including a Purple Heart and Bronze Star.

He is survived by his parents and two brothers, officials at Fort Polk said.

Army Sgt. 1st Class David R. Hurst was killed in action on 6/07/08.
