Sherer as “her nephew.” The last time Ms. Fonville-McCausley saw the soldier, she said, had been at Ribeye Joe’s, a restaurant and karaoke bar located in Smithfield.

“Before this last deployment, I used to see Jeff every Friday or Saturday night with his friends at Table One. When they walked in, they’d stick their finger up and say ‘One.’ They were all a good group of kids,” she said. “We all enjoyed karaoke and Jeff called me his ‘Aunt Sadie.’ Before I left, I hugged Jeff and told him that we were all so proud of his military service. I loved Jeff like a son.”

Sgt Sherer married just before this latest deployment..
