Army Pfc. Joel A. Ramirez, 22, of Waxahachie, Texas
Pfc Ramirez was assigned to 1st Battalion, 32nd Infantry Regiment, 3rd Brigade Combat Team, 10th Mountain Division, Fort Drum, N.Y.; died of wounds suffered April 16, 2011 in Nimroz province, Afghanistan, when insurgents attacked his unit with an improvised explosive device. Also killed were Spc. Paul J. Atim and Spc. Charles J. Wren.
WAXAHACHIE, Texas - Friends and family in Waxahachie are mourning the loss of a soldier killed in Afghanistan.
The family of 22-year-old Army Pvt. Joel Ramirez found out Saturday that he lost his life after a road bomb exploded.
He had been in Afghanistan for about a month.
Flags flew at half-staff at Waxahachie High School where Ramirez graduated in 2007.
School staffers, students and family said he was a true hero who was honored to serve his country.
Pfc. Ramirez was born in California and grew up there until his father got a job in Waxahachie in 2001. After graduating in 2007 and after playing for a soccer team for four years, he worked at several jobs in Dallas before joining the Army.
Army Pfc. Joel A. Ramirez was killed in action on 4/16/11.
