Army Spc. Anthony Vargas, 27, of Reading, Pa.
Spc. Vargas was assigned to 1st Squadron, 61st Cavalry Regiment, 4th Brigade Combat Team, 101st Airborne Division (Air Assault), Fort Campbell, Ky.; died Nov. 8, 2010 in Nangarhar province, Afghanistan, of wounds suffered when insurgents attacked his unit using an improvised explosive device.
A local Army soldier has lost his life in Afghanistan, according to the Department of Defense.
Spc. Anthony Vargas, 27, of Reading, died Monday in Nangarhar province, reported the DOD, which said Vargas was killed by an improvised explosive device, commonly known as an IED.
Vargas was part of the First Squadron, 61st Cavalry Regiment, 4th Brigade Combat Team, 101st Airborne Division (Air Assault), based out of Fort Campbell, Kentucky.
A Fort Campbell website said Vargas joined the Army in October 2008 and arrived at Fort Campbell in February 2009.
His awards and decorations include the National Defense Service Medal, the Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, the Army Commendation, and Army Service Ribbon.
Vargas is survived by his wife, Luisa L. Vargas, sons, Nathaniel and Lucas, and daughter, Olivia, all of Clarksville, Tenn.; and parents Julio and Maria of Reading, Pa.
Army Spc. Anthony Vargas was killed in action on 11/08/10.
