Army Staff Sgt. Dave J. Weigle, 29, of Philadelphia
SSgt. Weigle was assigned to 1st Squadron, 75th Cavalry Regiment, 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 101st Airborne Division (Air Assault), Fort Campbell, Ky.; died Oct. 10, 2010 of wounds sustained when insurgents attacked his unit with an improvised explosive device. Also killed was Spc. David A. Hess.
A soldier who formerly lived in West Philadelphia was killed along with another soldier Sunday when their vehicle struck an improvised explosive device in Afghanistan, the Department of Defense announced yesterday.
Staff Sgt. David J. Weigle, 29, stationed with the 101st Airborne Division at Fort Campbell, Ky., died Sunday, along with Spc. David A. Hess, 25, of Ruskin, Fla., in Zhari Province.
SSgt. Weigle was a cavalry scout assigned to Headquarters and Headquarters Troop, 1st Squadron, 75th Cavalry Regiment, 2nd Brigade Combat Team of the 101st Airborne, an air-assault unit.
He joined the service in March 2002 and earned a variety of decorations, including the Iraq Campaign Medal and the Global War on Terrorism Expeditionary Medal.
A memorial service will be held in Afghanistan. Fort Campbell holds a monthly Eagle Remembrance Ceremony to honor fallen Screaming Eagles. The next ceremony will be held October 13th at 4:00pm at the Family Resource Center.

He joined the Army in March 2002 and arrived at Fort Campbell in December 2004. His awards and decorations include: Army Commendation Medal; Army Achievement Medal; Army Good Conduct Medal; National Defense Service Medal; Iraq Campaign Medal; Global War on Terrorism Service Medal; Global War on Terrorism Expeditionary Medal; Noncommissioned Officer Professional Development; Army Service Ribbon; Overseas Service Ribbon; and Air Assault Badge.
On his Facebook page, he listed his hometown as Philadelphia and his current address as Clarksville, Tenn., near Fort Campbell, where he was based. He was a member of a group for Phillie's fans. He also indicated a connection to Robbinsville, N.J., which is near Trenton.
Army Staff Sgt. Dave J. Weigle was killed in action on 10/10/10.
