Army Sgt. 1st Class Gerard M. Reed, 40, of Jacksonville Beach, Fla.

SFC Reed was assigned to the 86th Combat Support Hospital, Fort Campbell, Ky.; died June 11, 2008 in Baghdad of injuries sustained in a non-combat-related incident.

For the first time during this deployment, a soldier from the 86th Combat Support Hospital died June 11 in Iraq.

Sgt. 1st Class Gerard M. Reed, 40, died from injuries suffered during a noncombat-related incident, according to the Department of Defense.

The incident is under investigation, the DoD release stated.

Reed, a Jacksonville Beach, Fla., native, was assigned to the 86th Combat Support Hospital, based at Fort Campbell.

His death is the first for the 86th CSH during this deployment and the 43rd since the division deployed in September to Iraq and in March to Afghanistan.

Reed was an experienced and decorated soldier. He entered the Army in November 1985 and came to Fort Campbell in January 2001.

Reed earned the Army Commendation Medal seven times, nine times earned the Army Achievement Medal and was given the Army Good Conduct Medal five times.

Reed is survived by his wife, T’Wona Reed, a son, Isaiah Jamar Reed, both of Clarksville, his mother, Bobby Brown Ramsey, and father, Clyde Reed, both of Jacksonville, Fla.

A funeral for Reed will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at Greater Missionary Baptist Church with Pastor Robert L. Tramil, eulogist, and the Rev. Willie Freeman officiating. Burial will be in Kentucky Veterans Cemetery-West.
